Vitamin robber: birth control pill

Vitamin-Räuber Antibabypille

But what should you do if the pill depletes your mineral levels?

In German-speaking countries, around 60% of women use the contraceptive pill

Known side effects of the drug range from listlessness, nausea, mood swings, irritability, headaches, water retention and weight gain to more serious side effects such as migraines and increased blood pressure or venous thrombosis.

Unfortunately, the fact that the pill can disrupt vitamin and mineral balance is not widely understood by women.

However, many of the common side effects have their origins right here!

For example, mood swings are directly linked to imbalances in vitamin and mineral levels. Common micronutrients whose blood concentrations are reduced by the pill include: vitamin B12, vitamin B6, vitamin B2, folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium, zinc, and selenium.

Example: Irritability / mood swings

In particular, vitamins B2, B6, B12, folic acid, vitamin C, magnesium and zinc compete with the active ingredients of the “pill” for the same enzymes and transport systems in metabolism.

The resulting lack of nutrients inhibits the production of the happiness hormone serotonin, which in turn can lead to side effects such as irritability or mood swings.

So, if you're taking the pill, make sure you get enough nutrients every day. This is also where the pill's other side effects come from.
